TRAJECT M HKA × kunsthuis Yellow Art 2026

In de sociaale artistieke ateliers ontmoet ik kunstenaars die vanuit een eigen beeldtaal werken, maar voor wie de weg naar de professionele kunstwereld niet vanzelfsprekend is. Hun werk ontstaat vaak binnen de beslotenheid van een atelier, in een omgeving waar zorg en kunstenaarschap voortdurend door elkaar heen lopen. Ik vraag me af wat er gebeurt wanneer we die omgeving verlaten. Wanneer niet de kwetsbaarheid van iemand, maar diens kunstenaarschap het vertrekpunt vormt.

Vanuit die gedachte ontwikkelde ik samen met Lies Jacobs van kunsthuis Yellow Art het initiatief TRAJECT, in samenwerking met M HKA in Antwerpen.

Tussen juni en september 2026 kwamen we met negen kunstenaars, verbonden aan verschillende artistieke ateliers binnen de zorg, vijf keer samen in het museum. We maakten kennis met de collectie, bezochten het depot en gingen in gesprek met kunstenaars Anne-Mie Van Kerckhoven, Vaast Colson en Liesbeth Grupping. Er werd gesproken over het maken van kunst, de ontwikkeling van een eigen praktijk en de mogelijkheden om werk naar buiten te brengen. Tijdens de werksessies was er ruimte om werk te tonen, naar elkaars werk te kijken, ervaringen uit te wisselen en na te denken over de het naar buiten brengen van het eigen kunstenaarschap.

Wat mij in dit traject bezighoudt, is de betekenis van de omgeving waarin kunst wordt gemaakt en gezien. Een museum biedt een ander perspectief dan een zorgcontext.. Niet omdat het werk daar anders wordt, maar omdat de manier waarop ernaar gekeken wordt kan verschuiven.

TRAJECT is voor mij een onderzoek naar de ruimte tussen twee werelden die elkaar niet vanzelfsprekend ontmoeten. Naar wat er kan ontstaan wanneer bestaande rollen en maskers tijdelijk naar de achtergrond verdwijnen en kunstenaars elkaar vanuit hun werk ontmoeten. →

In the social art studios, I meet artists who work from their own visual language, but for whom the path to the professional art world is not a given. Their work often takes shape within the privacy of a studio, in an environment where care and artistic practice are constantly intertwined. I wonder what happens when we leave that environment. When it is not a person’s vulnerability, but their artistry that serves as the starting point.

With this in mind, I developed the TRAJECT initiative together with Lies Jacobs of the Yellow Art art center, in collaboration with M HKA in Antwerp.

Between June and September 2026, we gathered five times at the museum with nine artists affiliated with various artistic studios within the care sector. We explored the collection, visited the storage facility, and engaged in conversations with artists Anne-Mie Van Kerckhoven, Vaast Colson, and Liesbeth Grupping. We discussed the process of creating art, developing one’s own artistic practice, and the possibilities for showcasing work to the public. During the workshops, there was space to display work, view each other’s pieces, exchange experiences, and reflect on how to present one’s own artistic practice to the outside world.

What interests me in this process is the significance of the environment in which art is created and viewed. A museum offers a different perspective than a care setting—not because the work itself changes there, but because the way it is viewed can shift.

For me, TRAJECT is an exploration of the space between two worlds that do not naturally intersect. It is an exploration of what can emerge when existing roles and masks temporarily fade into the background and artists connect with one another through their work. →
